HOW PLASTIC WASTE IS CONTAMINATING THE WORLD’S OCEANS
The devastating effects of excess plastic are well known – from garbage patches in the oceans to dirty beaches and animals dying painful deaths as a result of eating the plastic waste. Not only is the manufacture and use of plastic becoming a problem for the planet, disposing of it is also an issue. This raises the question why old plastic is not recycled more often and turned into new products. Unfortunately, the recycling rate in Germany and Europe is very low as, due to certain regulations, many materials are not suitable for recycling. Therefore a large amount of rubbish is exported abroad where there are fewer restrictions on dealing with plastic waste. However, a large amount of it is incinerated or ends up in the sea.
In order to counteract these improper disposal methods, more and more companies and consumers are focusing on recycled raw materials. Within the fashion industry, Fair Fashion is taking a stance to reduce the amount of plastic waste. You can find out more about sustainable fashion in our blog post.
